This 13th century building has been a meeting point in Bologna for centuries. Be sure to visit the 'whispering gallery' and look for the wooden supports on the ceiling where public hangings were carried out on market days in the distant past.

the arcade below the building has an outstanding acoustic effect, allowing to speak, even at low voice, from the four opposite corners of the vault itself. try it out, it's incredible.

The edifice was built around 1200 as the seat of the local podestà, the various functionaries of the commune. It stands on the Piazza Maggiore, near the Palazzo Comunale and facing the Basilica of San Petronio.

Under the vault of the Podestà (a bit macabre curiosity: hangings took place in the vault, you can still see the wooden beams on which the ropes were fixed), if you position yourself on opposite sides of the arches with another person, you will be amazed that, speaking facing the wall, it will be possible to hear each other clearly.

I visitatori potranno sperimentare un “telefono senza fili” parlandosi da un angolo all’altro della struttura. Originariamente sede del mercato e dei banchi dei notai, in seguito venne adibito come luogo in cui eseguire condanne alla berlina per i bestemmiatori o anche sentenze capitali per impiccagione. Qualche secolo più tardi gli venne attribuito anche un significato religioso con la collocazione delle quattro statue dei protettori di Bologna: San Petronio, San Francesco, San Domenico e San Procolo. 🇬🇧 The Voltone del Podestà opens under the palace of the same name in Piazza Maggiore. It is included among the seven secrets of Bologna for the curious sound game that is created under its vault. Visitors will be able to experience a "wireless phone" by talking to each other from one corner of the building to the other. Originally home to the market and the notaries' stalls, it was later used as a place to execute condemnations of the sedan for blasphemers or even death sentences by hanging. A few centuries later it was also attributed a religious significance with the placement of the four statues of the protectors of Bologna: San Petronio, San Francesco, San Domenico and San Procolo.
